Unity in Diversity: A Bridge to Tolerance

Updated: May 7

It is fascinating and disconcerting to observe how, at times, sparks of hostility fly among those whose essence lies in being beacons of hope and help for those in need. Yes, I am talking about individuals and organizations, including those of a religious nature, that sometimes engage in a game of mutual disqualification as fervent as a soap opera in its climax.

It is a spectacle that awakens concern. How is it possible that those who share a purpose as noble as serving others can get lost in a labyrinth of disputes? The reasons are as varied as the colors in a rainbow after a summer storm: ideological differences, a competitiveness that borders on the obsessive or, perhaps, a simple lack of understanding that could be resolved with a good cup of coffee and a sincere chat. .

At this point, I would like to invite you on a journey to the past, specifically to the New Testament. In Mark 9:38-42, we find a pearl of wisdom that could well be applied to our reflection. John, with that anxiety typical of exclusivist zeal, informs Jesus about an individual who, although not part of his inner circle, was performing powerful acts in his name. Jesus' response is a master class in inclusivity: "Do not forbid it... for he who is not against us is for us."

What a revolutionary concept! The idea that good can flourish beyond our personal or group boundaries is a call for tolerance and recognition of good deeds, regardless of the shield or flag waved by those who perform them. It is a shame that sometimes ego and ignorance prefer to dance a tango of discord instead of joining a harmonious chorus of collaboration.

Tolerance and respect are not just nice words to decorate speeches; They are the foundations on which we can build positive and collaborative relationships between different groups. Empathy becomes the cement that holds these blocks together, allowing us to understand other people's perspectives and act thoughtfully.

If we make the conscious effort to focus on what unites us – our shared humanity and intrinsic desire to do good – we could build indestructible bridges. Imagine a world where every act of kindness and understanding is another brick in the construction of a more compassionate and united society.

And for those who love Bible quotes, let me add another verse that fits perfectly: Hebrews 12:1 invites us to "lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besieges us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us." . In other words, let us leave unnecessary burdens behind and move forward with determination towards our common goals. United we are stronger, wiser and definitely much more interesting.

So, dear readers, I propose a challenge to you: the next time you are tempted to criticize or disqualify someone because they do not share your exact vision of the world, pause. Think about the wealth that resides in diversity and how each one, from his or her particular trench, contributes to the common well-being. After all, wouldn't it be boring if we were all ideological clones of each other?

In conclusion, let us celebrate our differences, build bridges of understanding and always remember that every gesture of openness and every kind word are golden threads in the fabric of a more harmonious society. Because at the end of the day, we are all in the same boat called Earth, rowing (or at least we should be) towards the same horizon of peace and solidarity.
