Haus der Religionen: A Groundbreaking Interfaith Haven in Bern, Switzerland – A Model for Global Coexistence

By Rev. Luis Gonzalez | Published on June 16, 2025 | TheIMFC.org

In a world often divided by religious and cultural differences, a remarkable initiative in Bern, Switzerland, stands as a beacon of hope and unity. The Haus der Religionen (House of Religions) at Europaplatz is not just a building; it’s a pioneering “laboratory of coexistence” where eight major world religions share a home, fostering dialogue, understanding, and community. Founded on the visionary idea of Pastor Hartmut Haas, an imam, and a rabbi, this interfaith center is redefining how religions can coexist harmoniously.

A Dream of Unity Turned Reality

What began as a modest dream over a decade ago has transformed into a modern, purpose-built complex that opened its doors in December. Initially, space was limited, with Hindus praying in a small temple and Buddhists, Alevis, and Moravian Christians gathering for meditation. Religions with established places of worship were given areas for displays and gatherings. Today, the Haus der Religionen houses dedicated spaces for Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Alevis, Sikhs, Baha’is, and people of the Jewish faith—a groundbreaking scale unmatched by most multi-faith centers worldwide.

This architectural marvel features five purpose-built homes for eight religions across two levels. Each faith has its own sacred space—a Christian church, a Hindu temple (with decorators flown in from India), a Buddhist center, an Alevi cemevi, a mosque, and more. Yet, what truly sets this center apart is its shared “dialogue room,” a communal space where members of different faiths come together to eat, meet, and host events for the wider community.

A Hub for Dialogue and Cultural Exchange

The Haus der Religionen is more than a collection of worship spaces; it’s a vibrant center for education, youth, and families. The ground floor of the main building functions as a restaurant, where interfaith meetings often take place over a meal, breaking down barriers through the universal language of food. Upstairs, a large common room and smaller activity rooms facilitate joint initiatives, cultural events, and discussions, encouraging dialogue among residents and visitors regardless of religious, cultural, or linguistic differences.

As a self-described “laboratory of coexistence,” the House serves as a model for how diversity can be celebrated rather than feared. It provides a safe space for learning and understanding, hosting events that bridge gaps and build connections within the Bern community and beyond.

Why Haus der Religionen Matters

In an era where religious tensions often dominate headlines, the Haus der Religionen offers a powerful counter-narrative. It demonstrates that coexistence is not only possible but can thrive when given the right environment. With spaces for worship, dialogue, and community engagement under one roof, this interfaith center in Bern is a testament to the vision of its founders and the dedication of all who support it.

For religious communities worldwide, the Haus der Religionen serves as an inspiration—a blueprint for creating spaces where mutual respect and understanding can flourish. Its success challenges us to imagine similar initiatives in cities across the globe, fostering peace through shared humanity.
