Buddhist Monks Complete 2,300-Mile Walk to Washington With Message of Peace and Unity

WASHINGTON — A group of Buddhist monks completed a 2,300-mile walk across the United States in Washington, where their months-long pilgrimage ended with an interfaith gathering at Washington National Cathedral and a public rally at the Lincoln Memorial focused on peace and unity.

The journey drew attention in communities across the country, where supporters gathered to greet the monks and hear their message of compassion, reconciliation, and shared purpose.

Organizers said the walk was intended to promote peace and encourage people to put those values into practice in daily life. By the time the monks arrived in the nation’s capital, supporters said the pilgrimage had become a symbol of endurance, humility, and interfaith goodwill.

At the cathedral, the monks joined the dean and other faith leaders for an interfaith event highlighting common values across religious traditions. The appearance underscored the broader significance of the walk beyond the Buddhist community, organizers said.

The following day, crowds gathered at the Lincoln Memorial, where the monks marked the end of their journey with a public rally. The memorial, long associated with calls for justice and moral leadership, provided a prominent backdrop for their message.

Supporters said the response in Washington reflected what had been visible throughout the walk: a broad public interest in messages of healing and unity at a time of social division.

Along the route, the monks were welcomed by people from a range of geographic, cultural and religious backgrounds. Some said they were inspired by the spiritual purpose of the pilgrimage, while others were moved by the physical discipline required to carry the message across such a long distance.

Organizers said the walk demonstrated the power of public witness through action. Rather than relying on digital outreach alone, the monks carried their message on foot across 2,300 miles, making it visible through sustained effort and presence.

Though the walk has ended, supporters said its message will continue.

The monks’ pilgrimage concluded in Washington, but organizers said the themes at its center — peace, unity and compassion — remain as relevant as ever.
